There's a Fungus Among Us! A Teaching Unit on Dutch Elm Disease and the Urban Forest

There's a fungus among us called "Dutch elm disease" and it could kill every American elm in Saskatchewan. Fortunately there is something that we can do about this situation and the grades 3 to 5 teaching unit, called "There's a Fungus Among Us", will help teachers and students understand what they can do to be part of the solution. The teaching unit package, produced by the Saskatchewan Dutch Elm Disease Association (SDEDA), is being distributed to every elementary school in the province this spring through Saskatchewan Learning. Once it arrives, teachers will be able to help their students learn more about Dutch elm disease and the urban forest.

The package includes the teaching unit with eight core lessons and eleven optional lessons, as well as a "Songs of the Trees" CD (as funding allows) , and a full colour poster with an associated activity sheet. Teachers will quickly see that the unit includes many "ready-to-go" information sheets, worksheets, and activities for extension of the unit. While the activities are aimed at the grade 3 to 5 science curriculum, there are also many activities that relate to language and creative arts. There's even a set of American elm bookmarks that can be used as prizes or learning incentives.

So, have no fear, the unit on Dutch elm disease is here!
