Facts

Dutch Elm Disease in Saskatchewan

  • Dutch elm disease (DED) first appeared in Saskatchewan in 1981 when one infected elm was found in Regina.
  • Now well-established in northeast and southeast Saskatchewan, we can expect DED to spread province-wide. It's only a matter of time!
  • The SDEDA acts as an advisory body to Saskatchewan Environment's Forest Ecosystems Branch that carries out a DED program involving:
    • an annual surveillance for DED
    • the removal of diseased elms
    • a DED cost-share program
    • Public awareness campaign
    • DED research
